Italy sea turtle nesting, rescues, and environmental risks
Overview
By mid-September 2026, sea turtle activity across Italy continued to highlight both conservation successes and environmental threats. In the Latina province, a record hatching event occurred in Terracina where 70 out of 75 Caretta caretta eggs successfully reached the sea. This marked the fifth nest identified in the province this season, contributing to a total of 11 nests recorded in the area by Legambiente Terracina.
In Senigallia, an emergence from a previously unidentified nest between August 30 and August 31 prompted an immediate response from the Fondazione Cetacea, the Coast Guard, and the Carabinieri Forestali CITES of Ancona. While some hatchlings were successfully assisted to the water, the event underscored the dangers of light pollution and vehicle traffic. Nine hatchlings were accidentally struck and killed by vehicles on a road behind the beach. Following the initial emergence, additional hatchlings were observed approximately 96 hours later. Experts, including Dr. Chiara Roncari, have established a monitoring presence in the area to protect subsequent emergences.
Rehabilitation efforts also reached new milestones. In Grottammare, a young Caretta caretta named Love is scheduled for release on September 19. Recovered near Porto d’Ascoli in April with severe hypothermia, anemia, liver dysfunction, and a displaced fracture, the turtle underwent intensive treatment at the Fondazione Cetacea Sea Turtle Hospital in Riccione. This release marks the first turtle recovered through the local activities of the Grottammare Marine Turtle Center.
Earlier in the season, rehabilitation efforts in the Lazio region concluded with the release of two turtles: Fortuna, rescued in Maccarese with a fishing hook, and Elisabeth, found trapped in abandoned waste.
