Caretta caretta sea turtles hatch along Italian coastlines
Recent sea turtle hatching events along the Italian coast have highlighted both successful conservation efforts and ongoing environmental challenges. In Terracina, a record hatching occurred where 70 out of 75 Caretta caretta eggs successfully reached the sea. This represents the fifth nest identified in the Latina province this season, contributing to a total of 11 nests recorded in the area by Legambiente Terracina.
In Senigallia, a different hatching event involving an unidentified nest revealed significant risks to marine life. While some hatchlings were successfully assisted to the water by the Fondazione Cetacea and the Coast Guard, the event underscored the dangers of light pollution and vehicle traffic. Nine hatchlings were accidentally killed by vehicles on a road near the beach. Experts are currently monitoring the area to protect subsequent emergences.
