Caribbean coast of Colombia faces emergency due to heavy flooding
Intense rainfall across Colombia’s Caribbean region has triggered emergencies, flooding, and property damage. In Cartagena, at least 376 homes across 24 neighborhoods were affected, while approximately 300 families in Santa Marta reported damages.
In the department of Atlántico, heavy rains in Barranquilla resulted in four vehicles being swept away by currents in the Villa Tarel neighborhood. Authorities in Montería, Córdoba, also reported flooded buildings and vehicles submerged in water. Due to the risk of rising river levels in the Piedras and Manzanares basins, a red alert has been declared in the Minca area of Santa Marta.
Meteorological experts attribute the weather to a combination of a trough and low-pressure zones in the Atlantic. Local authorities in Montería have issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, urging citizens to keep drainage systems clear to prevent further flooding and flash floods.
