CARICOM and India strengthen strategic partnership

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and India are strengthening their strategic partnership following meetings between foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. CARICOM has expressed support for India’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-2029 term.

Representing CARICOM, Minister Melvin Bouva emphasized shared values of democracy, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across several critical sectors, including agriculture, food security, renewable energy, healthcare, and climate resilience.

To facilitate future growth, the parties discussed the ‘Framework for Monitoring Caricom India Technical Cooperation 2025-2030,’ which aims to advance digital transformation and e-governance. Additionally, CARICOM voiced support for Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett as a candidate for UN Secretary-General.
