India UN Security Council candidacy
Overview
India is campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term. As part of its candidacy for the Asia Pacific region, India has introduced the ‘Shanti’ manifesto, which prioritizes peacekeeping reform. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, described peacekeeping as “irreplaceable to this Council’s core purpose” and proposed reforms to give troop-contributing nations a greater voice in shaping mandates.
During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a high-level meeting with the foreign ministers of the Visegrád Group (V4). The V4 nations expressed unanimous support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár characterizing India as an “upcoming superpower” and a vital representative of the Global South.
Furthering its diplomatic outreach, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has formally announced its support for India’s bid for a non-permanent seat for the 2028–2029 term. During meetings held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, CARICOM Minister Melvin Bouva emphasized shared values of “democracy, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order.”
Beyond political support, India and CARICOM agreed to deepen strategic and economic cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, food security, renewable energy, healthcare, and climate resilience. The parties also discussed the ‘Framework for Monitoring Caricom India Technical Cooperation 2025-2030,’ which aims to advance digital transformation and e-governance. Additionally, CARICOM voiced support for Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett as a candidate for UN Secretary-General.
