CARICOM to send high-level mission to Haiti to assess security and election progress
Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils‑Aimé announced that a high‑level CARICOM delegation will travel to Haiti at the end of July to evaluate advances in security, institutional stability and the democratic process ahead of upcoming elections. The statement was made after the 51st ordinary summit of CARICOM heads of state in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, where priorities such as gang violence, electoral preparation and regional cooperation were discussed.
Fils‑Aimé said the mission will review the deployment of the UN‑mandated multinational security force, which includes troops from Chad, and will seek renewal of its mandate. He highlighted support from Jamaica, the Bahamas and Saint Lucia, as well as new partnership interests from Romania and South Korea in security, training, trade and health. Guyana pledged a donation of 500 tonnes of rice to help vulnerable populations. The visit aims to gauge progress and guide further regional assistance.
The delegation’s evaluation will inform Haiti’s efforts to restore stability and create conditions for credible elections, which have been repeatedly postponed due to persistent armed gang activity.
