Junts per Catalunya pushes 'vía Starmer' plan to force Spanish PM Sánchez's resignation

Junts per Catalunya has revived a proposal it calls the “vía Starmer”, urging Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to step aside so that the parliamentary investiture bloc can select a new head of government without triggering a general election. The party says the plan mirrors the British transition that brought Keir Starmer to the premiership. Secretary‑General Jordi Turull told SER Catalunya that “it ‘consta’ that some socialist leaders would view the resignation favourably” and stressed that the successor need not be from the PSOE, only that they guarantee fulfilment of agreements with Junts. Spokesperson Míriam Nogueras described the current legislature as “unsustainable”, warning that paralysis on laws such as those for self‑employment fuels public discontent and benefits the far right. The PSOE has rejected the proposal, but Turull indicated willingness to discuss alternatives with the Popular Party if they abandon obstructionist tactics. The initiative remains a political maneuver without an identified replacement candidate.
