Italy political landscape shifts amid electoral reform and alliance denials

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing political pressure regarding electoral reform and potential early elections. Meloni has reportedly warned her coalition allies that failure to pass the electoral law in the Chamber of Deputies could lead to her resignation and a call for early voting. This move is viewed by some as a strategy to preempt opposition strength and address economic challenges, including inflation and energy crises.

In a separate political development, Carlo Calenda, leader of Azione, has stated there is ‘zero percent’ chance of an alliance with either Meloni’s Fratelli d'Italia or the Campo Largo opposition led by Giuseppe Conte. Calenda cited fundamental disagreements on European integration and NATO, while also criticizing Conte’s past economic policies. He expressed confidence that neither major political pole will secure the 42 percent majority required to govern.

Additionally, Meloni’s foreign policy stance continues to create distance between her and more radical European right-wing parties like Germany’s AfD, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and relations with Russia. Within her own coalition, tensions persist as members like Matteo Salvini and Roberto Vannacci hold differing views on Russia and European strategy.
