Reggio Calabria hosts AGAPE festival to celebrate Grecanico roots
The second edition of the AGAPE festival, titled ‘Le sfumature dell’Amore’, will take place in the southern district of Reggio Calabria from September 3 to 25. Promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Calabria as part of ReggioFest 2026, the festival focuses on the Grecanico language and the Greek identity of Calabria. The event is presented by Compagnia Teatrale BA17 and supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
This edition is dedicated to the memory of poet and scholar Salvino Nucera, who passed away in July 2025. The program aims to transform the Grecanico language from a heritage to be preserved into a living tool for contemporary artistic creation. Activities include theater, dance, visual poetry, immersive performances, and workshops held at various locations, such as Piazza Leopoldo Trieste and the Museo d’Arte ‘A. Frangipane’.
Other cultural events in the region include the documentary screening ‘Per Tutti Charly’ at the Arena dello Stretto, celebrating basketball legend Carlo Recalcati, and the ‘Sentiero Incantato’ theatrical season at Cine Teatro Odeon. Additionally, Paolo Ruffini’s acclaimed show ‘Din Don Down’, featuring the Compagnia Mayor Von Frinzius, is scheduled to perform in Corigliano-Rossano and Roccella Jonica.
