Carlos Alarcón clears legal challenge in Attorney General selection
Carlos Leonardo Alarcón, the acting Attorney General of Ecuador and a candidate for the permanent position, has cleared the only active citizen objection against him in the public selection process. The Citizen Selection Commission of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) ordered the immediate dismissal of the challenge after the complainant, Leonid Alex Arboleda Fabara, failed to attend the scheduled public hearing in Quito.
The objection had alleged a lack of probity regarding a 2022 report of suspected perjury. However, under the contest regulations, the failure of the challenger to appear or provide justification results in the automatic archiving of the case. Following the dismissal, Alarcón remains a leading candidate heading into the opposition phase, alongside other top-scoring applicants such as Daniella Camacho and Maritza Romero.
The remaining 26 candidates will now proceed to the final stages, which include a multiple-choice written exam and an oral practical case evaluation.
