Legal disputes and scrutiny regarding official appointments continue in Ecuador and Guatemala. In Ecuador, the selection process for the Attorney General has reached a decisive stage. Following the conclusion of public impeachment hearings on October 1, 2026, the Citizens' Selection Commission issued rulings on 41 challenges filed against 26 candidates. The commission accepted 21 challenges, resulting in the disqualification of several applicants, including the two highest-scoring candidates, Daniella Camacho and Inés Maritza Romero. As a result of these disqualifications, Carlos Alarcón Argudo, the current acting Attorney General, has moved from third place to the top of the list. The five remaining candidates are Carlos Alarcón Argudo, Mario Fonseca Vallejo, Juan Guaño Costales, Andrea Cazar Villacís, and Patricio Haro Aldean. Disqualified candidates have three days to appeal these decisions to the Plenary of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS).

Further legal challenges have emerged within the CPCCS. The Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE) disqualified José Manuel Buñay over disputes regarding professional experience certificates; Buñay is contesting the decision, alleging “discrimination and centralism.”

On October 13, 2026, the National Assembly of Ecuador officially censured and removed CPCCS member David Rosero from his position with 84 votes, largely supported by the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) party. Rosero was accused of conflict of interest and failure to perform his duties following allegations of an unofficial meeting with Attorney General candidate Inés Maritza Romero Estévez. Despite Rosero’s defense that photographic evidence was manipulated using artificial intelligence, the removal includes a two-year disqualification from holding public office. In Guatemala, legal challenges persist regarding administrative and corruption-related appointments.
