Tennis players debate Grand Slam best-of-five format
Professional tennis players are divided over a proposal to potentially reduce Grand Slam matches from a best-of-five sets format to best-of-three. The debate gained momentum following comments from Andrew Abdo, CEO of Tennis Australia, regarding the possibility of shortening matches to optimize commercial results and entertainment value.
Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev have both voiced strong opposition to the change. Alcaraz argued that moving to a three-set format would be ‘killing the legacy of the Grand Slams,’ suggesting instead that the ATP calendar should be reformed to reduce player workload and injury risks. Zverev emphasized that the best-of-five format is a defining historical challenge of the sport.
In contrast, Daniil Medvedev expressed a personal preference for best-of-three sets, noting that while such a change might diminish the history of the majors, he would adapt to whatever decision is made. Although the Australian Open clarified that five-set tennis will continue through 2027, the discussion regarding tournament formats and player welfare remains a central issue in the sport.
