Speaking at the SportNXT conference, Abdo suggested that the sport must evolve to avoid being “left behind,” mentioning possibilities such as reducing best-of-five sets in men’s singles or altering point-scoring systems.

Following these remarks, which sparked debate among fans and purists, the Australian Open issued a clarification. The tournament confirmed that the best-of-five set format will remain a staple of the competition, stating that “five-set tennis is here to stay.”

In a subsequent reaffirmation of this stance, the Australian Open clarified via social media that while “innovation is part of the AO’s DNA,” the current format for men’s matches will not change. This clarification follows speculation fueled by Abdo’s comments regarding match lengths potentially changing depending on the round to better entertain viewers. The discussion has gained momentum following several marathon matches at the US Open, including a quarterfinal between Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz that lasted 4 hours and 28 minutes. While the format remains unchanged for now, the Australian Open indicated that further updates regarding the 2027 tournament will be revealed soon.
