Carlos Alonso, renowned Argentine painter, dies at 97

Renowned Argentine visual artist Carlos Alonso has died in Unquillo, Córdoba province, at the age of 97. Alonso was considered one of South America’s most celebrated 20th-century artists, known for an innovative figurative style.

His career was defined by a struggle against state censorship and political authoritarianism during Argentina’s military regime. Alonso used his work to provide testimony to political violence and social critique, often incorporating raw depictions of torture and repression into his art. His pieces frequently blended classical references with contemporary political imagery, such as his work connecting Rembrandt to the assassination of Che Guevara.

Beyond his political commentary, Alonso was a highly skilled illustrator of classic literature, including works by Dante Alighieri and Miguel de Cervantes. His passing marks the end of a significant era in Argentine art.
