Death of Argentine artist Carlos Alonso

Overview

Argentine painter, draftsman, and engraver Carlos Alonso has died at the age of 97 in Unquillo, Córdoba.

A central figure of 20th-century Argentine art, Alonso was recognized for his expressionist and innovative figurative style. His career was deeply influenced by Argentina’s political history, specifically the military dictatorship of 1976-1983. During this era, he lived in exile in Italy and Spain, using his art to provide testimony to political violence, state censorship, and social critique. His work often explored themes of the human body, power, and repression, sometimes incorporating raw depictions of torture.

In addition to his political commentary, Alonso was a noted illustrator of literary classics such as ‘Don Quixote’, ‘The Divine Comedy’, and ‘Martín Fierro’. His personal life was also marked by the 1977 disappearance of his daughter, Paloma, a tragedy that became a recurring theme in his work. He received several honors, including two Konex de Platino awards and the National Award for Artistic Trajectory.
