Peru faces rising crime concerns and political pressure

Peru faces escalating security challenges and political scrutiny regarding organized crime. Interior Minister César Astudillo has defended the government's stance, characterizing the surge in violence as a ‘media perception’ despite recent reports of nine murders in Piura within three days. Astudillo has called for a legislative debate to implement life sentences for military and police personnel involved in criminal activities.

Political figures and citizens are expressing growing dissatisfaction. Former presidential candidate Carlos Álvarez criticized President Keiko Fujimori for retaining officials who have failed to curb criminality. Meanwhile, in the triple border region between Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, the Ticuna indigenous people have requested state intervention, reporting that criminal organizations are forcing them to cultivate coca.

In response to environmental risks, Transport Minister Rafael Rey announced preventative measures, including the deployment of modular bridges to protect road infrastructure against the potential El Niño phenomenon.
