Fujimori inauguration and 2026 elections

Overview

Keiko Fujimori’s transition team continued preparations for her 28 July inauguration as Peru’s first directly elected female president. On 16 July she received her presidential credentials at the Gran Teatro Nacional, alongside vice‑presidents Luis Galarreta and Miguel Torres. In her address she pledged a “government of management” focused on reducing inequality, combating organized crime, reviving the economy, and addressing climate risks such as El Niño. She called for national reconciliation and reiterated Peru’s support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara.

The Jurado Nacional de Elecciones will also issue credentials for the new bicameral Congress, whose preparatory junta will oversee the formal installation of parliamentarians before the chamber begins full operations on 27 July. The parliament remains tightly balanced, making early coalition‑building critical.

Local election dynamics intensified. Data from the 2026 regional and municipal contests show a stark gender gap in Ayacucho, where women comprise only 7.6 % of mayoral candidates, and no province exceeds 15 % female representation. In Junín, the Peru Libre party submitted no candidates, jeopardising its registration if it fails to meet the electoral threshold.

Earlier, a mayoral candidate in Huancayo faced trial for alleged irregularities, illustrating the heightened scrutiny of local officials as the country approaches the 4 October regional and municipal polls.
