Carlos Queiroz departs Ghana national team role
Carlos Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have mutually agreed to terminate Queiroz’s contract as head coach of the Black Stars. The decision follows a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, where Ghana suffered two consecutive defeats: a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire and a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia.
Queiroz, 73, had recently been reappointed in September to lead the team through the qualifiers after previously guiding them to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During his total tenure of seven matches, he recorded one win, two draws, and four losses, with a goal difference of -5.
In his farewell statement, Queiroz noted that while the decision was difficult, it was the most appropriate step given the current circumstances and the interests of Ghanaian football. He also highlighted that the necessary professional conditions and infrastructure required for elite performance were not fully established. The GFA is now expected to seek a replacement to stabilize the team's qualifying prospects.
