Ghana Black Stars coaching transitions

Following his dismissal by the Ghana Football Association, former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo expressed his intention to return to coaching in roles ranging from head coach to assistant coach. Addo, who led the team to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification but missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, indicated he is open to various technical positions.

In a shift from previous reports regarding his departure, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council has unanimously recommended that Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz remain as the head coach of the Black Stars. This recommendation follows the team’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, any new contract for Queiroz requires final approval from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is responsible for financing the coach’s salary.

As the leadership situation evolves, Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko continues to express his readiness to lead the national team if considered the right candidate. Tanko, a former assistant coach for the Black Stars and head coach of the Black Meteors, remains among several potential contenders as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
