Carlos Queiroz to lead Ghana's Black Stars in AFCON qualifiers
Carlos Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana this week to begin his tenure as head coach of the Black Stars for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The 73-year-old Portuguese manager, who recently led Ghana to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, is reportedly on a one-year contract with the possibility of an extension if he secures AFCON qualification.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has defended the decision to retain Queiroz, with Communications Director Henry Asante Twum emphasizing that competitive results take precedence over an attractive style of play. The GFA noted that the primary objective is to return Ghana to Africa’s premier football tournament after the team failed to qualify for the previous AFCON in Morocco.
Ghana’s qualifying campaign begins later this month. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on 24 September, followed by a home match against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
