Carmel infrastructure faces sewage and flooding risks after bridge collapse

Severe flooding in Carmel, Indiana, has caused a bridge collapse on Hazel Dell Parkway over Blue Woods Creek, leading to significant infrastructure risks. The floodwaters have reversed the creek's flow and redirected it toward the Martin Marietta Carmel Sand & Gravel quarry, which is already 75% full.

Officials warn of a 90% chance that a major sewer line, which carries 90% of the city's wastewater to a treatment plant, could collapse. Such a failure could result in raw sewage flowing into the quarry and subsequently into the White River. While Mayor Sue Finkam noted that the city's drinking water would not be affected, the potential for environmental pollution remains a high concern.

Repairing the widespread infrastructure damage across central Indiana could cost more than $1 billion. The situation is complicated by jurisdictional lines between the city of Carmel and Hamilton County regarding the repair of the severed thoroughfare.
