Chilean agricultural sector faces climate and competitive challenges

The Chilean agricultural industry is navigating significant challenges related to climate variability, international competition, and infrastructure needs. In the Maule region, recent heavy rains and hail have caused damage to over 600 farmers, impacting crops such as cherries, blueberries, and vegetables.

To address these issues, industry leaders are calling for increased coordination. Frutas de Chile has emphasized the need for better cooperation among blueberry producers and exporters to manage variety changes and rising quality standards. Meanwhile, the government has signaled its willingness to restore funding for the international promotion and protection of the Pisco denomination of origin.

On the infrastructure front, the Plan Chile Despega is underway in the Valparaíso and Maule regions. In Valparaíso, over $34 billion CLP in tenders have been published to boost connectivity and employment. In Maule, the plan has published 100% of its tenders, investing over $31 billion CLP primarily in rural roads and bridges to stimulate the local economy.

Additionally, regional development continues in Aysén with the approval of seven technological projects aimed at diversifying agriculture and energy production. In the viticulture sector, Maule wineries are actively seeking new commercial ties in Peru to expand their international presence.
