Chilean agricultural sector challenges and development

Overview

The Chilean agricultural sector is addressing a combination of climate-related damages, regulatory updates, and infrastructure development. In the O’Higgins and Maule regions, extreme weather including heavy rains and hailstorms has impacted production, specifically affecting crops such as cherries, blueberries, and vegetables. Authorities and regional committees are working to assess the scale of these losses to plan support measures for farmers.

On the regulatory and economic front, the National Agriculture Society has joined a technical working group with the Internal Revenue Service to establish methodologies for the 2029 Agricultural General Revaluation. This effort aims to ensure land valuations reflect actual productive conditions.

To stimulate regional economies, the Plan Chile Despega is implementing infrastructure projects in Valparaíso and Maule, focusing on rural roads, bridges, and connectivity. Additionally, efforts are underway to diversify agriculture through technological projects in Aysén and to expand international market presence for the viticulture sector.
