Carrefour Poland shuts stores and recalls ham over Listeria risk

Carrefour Polska announced a strategic downsizing of its Polish operations, closing a number of hypermarkets and shifting to smaller formats to improve profitability. The retailer said the number of stores fell from 850 in 2022 to 737 in 2025 and that further closures are planned, noting that “customers no longer want to shop in 12‑thousand‑square‑metre hypermarkets.”

At the same time, Carrefour issued a product recall for a cooked pork ham (Polska Gościna) after laboratory tests found Listeria monocytogenes in certain batches. The company advised consumers not to eat the ham, to return it to stores with a receipt, and warned of possible listeriosis if the product is consumed.
