European food safety recalls widen
Overview
The recall wave that began in late May 2026 across Romania, Greece, Italy and France has continued through August. Early actions removed roe‑salad in Romania and mixed salads, smoked trout and smoked carp fillets in Greece after Listeria was detected. Greek authorities also recalled a French Petit Brie for Staphylococcus aureus toxin, a high‑protein chocolate pudding for organoleptic defects, a frozen chicken roll for Salmonella and ready‑made hummus for Salmonella in tahini. Italy added salmon carpaccio, pecorino cheese and several salami varieties after Listeria, Salmonella or STEC were found. France expanded recalls to include an Italian dry‑ham, pre‑packaged barbecue sausages, minced steaks, frozen red berries (norovirus) and brie cheese (Listeria). In mid-August, E. Leclerc issued a massive recall for various smoked salmon products, including brands such as Delpierre, Labeyrie, and Mowi, due to a suspected cold chain breach and Listeria risk. Carrefour also issued nationwide recalls in France for its ‘Burger Maxi Bacon’ (Carrefour Bon Appétit brand) and two Reflets de France cooked ham products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. By late August, French authorities identified further risks, including Salmonella in Monique Ranou sliced dry sausage, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in L'Etal du BOUCHER ground beef, and Salmonella in Vertufood sports mix. Other recalls included Capitaine Houat sardine fillets due to histamine and various deli salads and shrimp cocktails due to potential foreign objects like glass, metal, or plastic. Additionally, Georges Mezotti recalled certain toilet waters due to the presence of chemical substances. In early September, French health and agriculture ministries issued a massive recall for pumpkin seeds following a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. Investigations by Santé publique France and the Institut Pasteur traced the contamination to a processing facility in the Lot-et-Garonne department.
