Carris unveils new plan for Lisbon's Glória elevator
Carris has unveiled the technical strategy for the future Glória elevator in Lisbon, nearly one year after a tragic derailment on September 3, 2025, which resulted in 16 deaths and 24 injuries. The company announced that the project will not be a simple reconstruction of the previous system but a completely new installation designed to meet modern safety, reliability, and sustainability standards.
The new elevator is expected to feature a cabin made of more resistant materials rather than traditional wood. Carris plans to launch an international public tender for the design and construction of the system in the first quarter of 2027, with the goal of inaugurating the new equipment in 2029. The project aims to balance high-tech safety requirements with the preservation of the historical identity of the Calçada da Glória.
While the new infrastructure is being planned, the official investigation into the causes of the 2025 accident continues. The accident investigation body, GPIAAF, has indicated that the final report is now expected to be released by the end of the first quarter of 2027 due to the complexity of the technical assessments.
