Carson Peters-Berger resolution hearing may avoid November trial

A resolution hearing has been scheduled for August 26 in the case of Carson Peters-Berger, 18, who is charged in connection with the 2022 death of his 10-year-old cousin, Lily Peters. The hearing may prevent a previously scheduled November jury trial.

Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell stated that the hearing indicates the case will likely not proceed to trial. However, defense attorney Michael Cohen noted the hearing will "address issues in the case that will determine whether there will be a trial." The specific terms of any potential resolution remain undisclosed, and related court records have been sealed by Chippewa County Circuit Judge Steven Gibbs.

Lily Peters was reported missing in April 2022 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Her body was discovered the following day near a wooded area where her bicycle was found. Peters-Berger, who was 14 at the time of the incident, faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide and sexual assault. Despite his age at the time of the alleged crime, legal proceedings have remained in adult court following unsuccessful attempts by the defense to transfer the case to the juvenile system.
