PFAS production surges to meet AI and data center demand
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure is driving a surge in demand for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as ‘forever chemicals.’ A report by the Swedish nonprofit ChemSec reveals that major chemical producers are increasing production to meet the needs of the semiconductor industry, lithium-ion battery manufacturing, and data center infrastructure.
In data centers, PFAS are utilized in advanced cooling systems, such as two-phase immersion cooling, where servers are submerged in fluids that manage heat through evaporation and condensation. This demand persists even as regulatory bodies in the European Union and elsewhere attempt to restrict the use of these substances due to their extreme environmental persistence and potential health risks.
Health concerns regarding PFAS include their ability to accumulate in human bodies and ecosystems, potentially causing issues with hormone systems, liver function, and immune responses. Experts warn that the environmental and health costs of the AI boom include these chemical risks, which are often less visible than the industry's high electricity and water consumption.
