Carter Bridge reconstruction in Lagos targeted for 24-month completion

The Nigerian Federal Government has accelerated the reconstruction timeline for the Carter Bridge in Lagos, aiming for completion within 24 months instead of the original 36-month schedule. Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the revised target following an inspection of the project.

The 1.58km bridge has experienced significant structural deterioration due to decades of inadequate maintenance, rust, scouring, and illegal sand mining. An underwater survey revealed that foundations and piles have become detached from their caps.

The reconstruction project, managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), will feature a new design including additional ramps, a cable-stayed section for improved navigation clearance, and carriageways arranged at different levels. Protective measures such as gabions will also be implemented to shield the foundations from erosion. Preliminary work is approximately 15 per cent complete, with piling expected to commence shortly.
