Carter Bridge reconstruction in Lagos

Overview

The Nigerian Federal Government has accelerated the reconstruction timeline for the Carter Bridge in Lagos. Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced that the project, managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), is now targeted for completion within 24 months rather than the original 36-month schedule.

The 1.58km bridge has suffered from structural deterioration caused by decades of inadequate maintenance, rust, scouring, and illegal sand mining. Underwater surveys indicated that foundations and piles have become detached from their caps. The new design will include additional ramps, a cable-stayed section for improved navigation clearance, and multi-level carriageways. Protective measures, such as gabions, will be used to shield foundations from erosion. Preliminary work is approximately 15 per cent complete.
