Caserta faces opposition to private waste plant in Cava Iuliano

On July 28 a conference of services met to examine a proposed private waste‑treatment plant at the Cava Iuliano quarry in San Clemente, a district of Caserta, Italy. Monsignor Pietro Lagnese, the archbishop of Capua and bishop of Caserta, warned that the project could jeopardise public health, increase traffic and damage the fragile hydro‑geological environment.

Local activist group Free Caserta also voiced strong opposition, arguing that the plant would bring excessive smog, fine‑particulate matter and heavy‑truck traffic to an area already congested with schools, parks and the new university hospital. The group stresses that San Clemente has already borne the cost of previous quarry exploitation and calls for the site to be restored to green space rather than turned into an open‑air landfill.
