Italian local waste facility opposition

In late July 2026, two municipalities in Italy saw heightened local resistance to waste‑related projects. In Caserta, officials and activists gathered to examine a proposed private waste‑treatment plant at the Cava Iuliano quarry, warning that the facility could jeopardise public health, increase traffic and damage the fragile hydro‑geological environment. The group Free Caserta called for the site to be restored to green space rather than become an open‑air landfill.

The following day in nearby Cassino, opposition councillors pressed the mayor to pause decisions on the Villa Comunale site until forensic examinations were completed. They cited earlier complaints about waste disposal and alleged illegal dumping during construction, demanding scientific data and transparency before any remedial action. Both cases illustrate a broader pattern of municipal opposition to waste infrastructure in the region, with health, environmental and procedural concerns driving public dissent.
