Casey Stoner fights to keep Phillip Island on MotoGP calendar
Former MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner has announced his intention to fight for the return of the Phillip Island circuit to the MotoGP calendar. The decision to move the Australian Grand Prix to a new street circuit in Adelaide, scheduled for November 2027, has caused significant disappointment among fans and riders.
Stoner, who won six consecutive races at Phillip Island between 2007 and 2012, expressed that the removal of the track is “massively” disappointing. While acknowledging that the circuit may require certain improvements, he argued that the prestige and quality of the racing at Phillip Island should not be replaced by a street circuit.
The Phillip Island Grand Prix has been a staple of the calendar since 1997, with the venue hosting races annually since 1989, barring pandemic-related exceptions and a brief period at Eastern Creek in the 1990s.
