MotoGP 2027 technical and tyre regulation changes
Overview
MotoGP is preparing for a series of technical and commercial transitions scheduled for the 2027 season. A major change involves Pirelli becoming the sole tyre supplier for all Grand Prix categories, including MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3, replacing Michelin. Under this new arrangement, Pirelli will manage logistics and technical support, and intends to remove the minimum-pressure rule.
Beyond the tyre transition, the 2027 regulations will include a reduction in engine displacement from 1000cc to 850cc, new restrictions on aerodynamics, and the removal of ride-height devices. Rider Marc Marquez has indicated that the shift in tyre characteristics may be the most impactful change for competitors, noting that younger riders transitioning from Moto2 might benefit from their existing familiarity with Pirelli tyres.
KTM test rider Pol Espargaro has characterized the upcoming supplier transition as “much more drastic” than the 2016 shift from Bridgestone to Michelin, warning that the new tyres will fundamentally alter riding styles and motorcycle behavior. He suggested that manufacturers with strong ties to World Superbike, such as Ducati, might gain a competitive advantage through their familiarity with Pirelli products.
To prepare for these changes, MotoGP has announced a preseason testing schedule. Testing is set to begin at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia on December 1, 2026. This will be followed by a shakedown for test riders and rookies at the Sepang International Circuit on January 29–30, 2027, with official testing at the same venue on January 31–February 1. The final official test will occur at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand, on February 6–7, ahead of the season launch in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 21.
