Wero expands German retail presence through dm and Lidl partnerships

The European payment service Wero, a project of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is expanding its presence in the German retail market. The drugstore chain dm plans to integrate Wero into its online shop starting August 25, 2026, following a similar move by Lidl. For dm, the service offers a direct bank connection that is expected to be more cost-effective than providers like PayPal.

Despite these strategic partnerships with major retailers, Wero faces significant adoption challenges. A survey by Verivox indicates that the service has low brand awareness in Germany; only 39% of respondents can correctly identify Wero as a payment service, and 61% remain unsure of what it is. Furthermore, actual usage remains low, with only about 7% of respondents having used the service to transfer money or complete a purchase. The initiative aims to establish a European alternative to dominant US-based systems like Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal, but it must overcome a 'chicken-and-egg' problem regarding consumer acceptance and merchant availability.
