Casino Group rebrands to Plesio to focus on proximity retail

The French retail group Casino has announced its rebranding to Plesio, a move designed to signal a strategic shift toward proximity commerce. The new name, derived from the Greek word for proximity, aims to unify the group’s diverse portfolio under a single corporate identity.

While the parent company will operate as Plesio, its individual commercial brands—including Monoprix, Franprix, Cdiscount, Naturalia, Spar, Vival, and the Casino convenience stores—will retain their existing names and identities. This restructuring follows a period of significant transformation for the group, which included the divestment of most of its hypermarkets and supermarkets in France and a restructuring plan involving 2,200 layoffs.

Philippe Palazzi, the group's CEO, stated that the change reflects a conviction that the future of retail lies in proximity. Under the 'Renouveau 2030' strategic plan, Plesio intends to expand its formats, enhance takeaway food offerings, and increase support for franchised merchants. The group currently operates approximately 6,500 establishments and employs 25,000 people in France.
