Caspian Sea environmental protection discussed at regional forums

International conferences were held in Turkmenistan and Iran to mark Caspian Sea Day and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Tehran Convention, which protects the marine environment of the Caspian Sea.

In Awaza, Turkmenistan, an environmental forum titled ‘Protecting the Caspian Sea Ecosystem: Regional Cooperation and Sustainable Development’ brought together representatives from Caspian littoral states, the European Union, and various United Nations agencies. Discussions focused on the Caspian Environmental Initiative, the need for regular marine monitoring, and addressing declining water levels. Participants also emphasized the use of innovative technologies and artificial intelligence in conservation efforts.

A parallel conference took place in Tehran, Iran, attended by Iranian officials and ambassadors from Caspian littoral states. The event highlighted Turkmenistan’s commitment to international cooperation regarding the sea’s ecological state. The discussions served as a precursor to an upcoming meeting of Heads of State scheduled for October 9, 2026, in the Avaza National Tourist Zone, aimed at ensuring environmental security and sustainable development in the region.
