Cassandra Barksdale sues Kaiser Permanente over misdiagnosed cancer and unnecessary hysterectomy

Georgia resident Cassandra Barksdale filed a negligence lawsuit in Clayton County against Kaiser Permanente, alleging that a specimen labeling error caused doctors to diagnose her with aggressive uterine cancer. The error reportedly involved another patient’s tissue being mislabeled as Barksdale’s, leading to a pathology report that indicated high‑grade endometrial carcinoma.

Based on that diagnosis, Barksdale underwent a total hysterectomy on May 15, 2025, which removed her uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and four lymph nodes. Post‑surgical pathology found no malignant cells and later DNA analysis confirmed the original biopsy sample belonged to a different patient. Kaiser Permanente said it has trained staff and thorough processes to prevent such errors and took steps after the incident.

The case highlights concerns about pathology sample handling, with a similar lawsuit cited from Ohio involving a 2019 biopsy error that led to a lung‑cancer misdiagnosis.
