Cassino apartment explosion causes roof collapse and critical injuries

A violent explosion occurred in an apartment on the top floor of a building in Cassino, Italy, on the morning of August 24, 2026. The blast, suspected to be caused by a gas leak when a couple attempted to use a stove for coffee, resulted in the collapse of the building's roof.

Two healthcare workers, a 54-year-old male nurse and a 40-year-old female socio-sanitary worker, were critically injured. The man sustained burns to approximately 90% of his body, while the woman suffered burns to roughly 70%. Both victims were stabilized at Santa Scolastica Hospital before being airlifted to the specialized Sant’Eugenio Hospital in Rome for intensive treatment.

Emergency responders, including the Carabinieri, Fire Department, and specialized GOS units, secured the scene. Mayor Enzo Salera issued an evacuation order for the entire building as authorities assess structural stability. A judicial investigation has been opened by prosecutor Laura d’Elia to determine if gas installations were compliant with safety regulations.
