Cassino apartment gas explosion and building collapse
Overview
On August 24, 2026, a violent explosion occurred in a top-floor apartment in Cassino, Italy, suspected to be caused by a gas leak during an attempt to use a stove. The blast caused the building’s roof to collapse and resulted in critical injuries to two healthcare workers.
One victim, a 54-year-old male nurse, sustained burns to approximately 90% of his body, while a 40-year-old female socio-sanitary worker suffered burns to roughly 70%. Following the incident, Mayor Enzo Salera ordered an evacuation of the building, and prosecutor Laura d’Elia opened a judicial investigation into the safety compliance of the gas installations.
By August 27, it was confirmed that the nurse, Carmine Sirica, had died at San Pio hospital in Benevento after being transferred from Sant’Eugenio hospital in Rome. His partner, Katia Adinolfi, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
