Castellammare di Stabia municipal council dissolved over Camorra infiltration

The municipal council of Castellammare di Stabia was dissolved for the second consecutive time after a prefectural investigation uncovered extensive infiltration of the Camorra into local politics and administration. A 400‑page report prepared by the Commission of Access highlighted ties between dozens of elected officials, candidates and municipal staff and the D’Alessandro and Cesarano clans, including family relationships, business partnerships and alleged bribery.

Key figures mentioned include former mayor Roberto Elefante, councilors Rosanna De Simone, Mario D’Apuzzo, Gino Tommasino and others whose personal or professional links to known mafiosi were deemed incompatible with public office. The report also criticized the municipal police commander, Colonel Francesco Del Gaudio, for familial connections to a clan member and called for the appointment of a senior overseer to the municipal police force.

Procurement practices were scrutinized: contracts for waste removal, school catering and technical works were awarded to firms linked to Camorra‑associated families, with some deals totaling €18 million. The investigation concluded that promised anti‑mafia measures under mayor Luigi Vicinanza were not implemented, leading to the council’s dissolution and a 18‑month administrative takeover.
