A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, crossing the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The path of totality runs from Galicia to Castellón and the Balearic Islands, with totality lasting about one minute around 20:30 local time.

Spanish municipalities are preparing for the event. Valencia will deploy more than 200 municipal personnel to manage crowds and safety. Reus has organized a special mobility plan, adding bus lines L82 and L20, expecting up to 10 000 visitors and distributing 5 000 certified eclipse glasses. In Ares del Maestrat, the official observation point will be the Mola de Ares at 1 321 m, where totality is forecast for 20:31.

Scientists from the University of Oviedo, the University of Georgia and other institutions will use the eclipse to study how brief darkness affects crepuscular insects. The planetarium of Gijón will host free sessions, and NASA will broadcast live coverage via NASA+ and other platforms, urging the public to use ISO 12312‑2 certified glasses. The eclipse coincides with the Perseids meteor‑shower peak.

Wildfires that have burned over 150 000 ha across Spain this year raise concerns about smoke and evacuations potentially affecting viewing conditions. France will see a deep partial eclipse (up to 99 % obscuration) and Italy, Portugal and other nearby regions will experience partial phases.
