Castilla-La Mancha strengthens rare disease healthcare strategy

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha is advancing its Regional Strategy for Rare Diseases, focusing on the humanization of healthcare and improved coordination for patients and their families. The initiative aims to place patient needs at the center of the medical response, addressing the clinical and social complexities often associated with infrequent pathologies, such as long diagnostic periods and impacts on autonomy and employment.

To support this strategy, the regional executive has increased funding for direct aid to 300,000 euros this year to help cover costs related to these conditions. Alberto Jara, the managing director of the Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (Sescam), noted that the framework seeks to consolidate resources, research lines, and support mechanisms under a single model.

Key developments include the formation of a multidisciplinary advisory group, which is scheduled to hold its first meeting next week. Additionally, the health administration is implementing case management nursing to strengthen continuous follow-up and personalized accompaniment. Efforts are also underway to adapt healthcare spaces to better accommodate affected individuals and their relatives.
