Castilla-La Mancha healthcare service improvements
Overview
Health services in Castilla-La Mancha are implementing various infrastructure and strategic upgrades to improve patient care. Initial developments focused on localized hospital improvements, such as the ‘Peditour’ project in Guadalajara designed to humanize pediatric surgical care and the renovation of the Pharmacy Service in Hellín to manage increased demand for oncology and hematology medications.
The regional government has since advanced its Regional Strategy for Rare Diseases, focusing on the humanization of healthcare and improved coordination. This initiative aims to place patient needs at the center of medical responses to address clinical and social complexities, such as long diagnostic periods and impacts on autonomy. To support this, the regional executive has increased direct aid to 300,000 euros. Alberto Jara, managing director of the Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (Sescam), stated the framework seeks to consolidate resources, research lines, and support mechanisms under a single model. Key components include a multidisciplinary advisory group and the implementation of case management nursing for personalized accompaniment.
Efforts to strengthen nuclear medicine were highlighted during the II Regional Conference of Nuclear Medicine in Guadalajara. Cristina Pérez Hortet, Director General of Healthcare Assistance at SESCAM, emphasized the goal of providing more precise and personalized care through expanded services in Guadalajara and the implementation of PET-TC and SPECT-TC technologies in Cuenca, supported by the NumisCAM image-sharing tool.
Furthermore, the regional government has allocated 3.5 million euros over two years to modernize breast cancer prevention and treatment equipment. This includes 1.35 million euros for three state-of-the-art breast biopsy tables, including one for the Hospital General Universitario de Ciudad Real, utilizing tomosynthesis and three-dimensional imaging to improve the detection of millimeter-sized lesions.
