Castilla y León Drowning Deaths Rise to 11 in 2025

A nine‑year‑old boy drowned in the Pisuerga river near Valladolide, bringing the total number of drowning deaths in Castilla y León to 11 this year, according to the National Drowning Report of the Spanish Rescue and Lifesaving Federation. The latest fatality follows other recent incidents in the region, including a teenage boy found dead in the Ricobayo reservoir in Zamora and two women who drowned while rescuing a child at the Baños de Cerrato reservoir in Palencia.

Spain recorded 472 unintentional drowning deaths in 2025, the second‑worst figure of the past decade. Health experts warn that prolonged oxygen deprivation during drowning can cause permanent brain damage, with symptoms ranging from memory and attention deficits to motor and language impairments. Immediate medical evaluation and tailored neuro‑rehabilitation are recommended even for victims who appear fine after rescue.
