Castilla y León Parliament Criticised for High Costs and Lack of Oversight

The regional parliament of Castilla y León (the Cortes) is described as unsustainable, costing taxpayers more than €30 million each year for salaries, expenses and amortisations while delivering limited legislative output.

Critics note the absence of a system to control working hours or labour conditions after four decades of operation, accusations of deputies’ absenteeism, and a recent harassment lawsuit that exposed gaps in anti‑harassment protocols. For the first time, President Francisco Vázquez published the Mesa de las Cortes agreements, a step hailed as historic but underscoring the demand for greater transparency, tighter payroll controls and reform of internal procedures.
