Castilla y León reinforces museum security amid rise in thefts
The Junta de Castilla y León is strengthening security measures in regional museums following a rise in thefts across various European countries. The regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism is coordinating with the Ministry of Culture and state security forces to implement preventive actions.
Authorities noted that the theft of the Villena Treasure is part of a criminal phenomenon involving increasingly aggressive methods. Criminal organizations are reportedly targeting gold, silver, precious stones, and jewelry due to their ease of melting or illicit resale.
New measures include updating diagnostics of collections and sensitive areas, reviewing display cases and exhibition systems for high-risk pieces, and increasing coordination with local National Police forces.
