The stolen items consist of a gold jewelry ensemble dating to approximately 1000 BC, considered one of the most significant Bronze Age gold collections in Europe.

Following the theft, the Villena City Council launched an investigation commission to clarify the circumstances of the robbery. This commission summoned 17 individuals for hearings in October, including the regional Minister of Culture, Carmen Ortí, and the Mayor of Villena, Fulgencio Celdrán. Legal action has also been initiated following a complaint from the Asociación para la Defensa del Estado de Derecho (ADED), which seeks to determine if officials were negligent in their duties.

In October 2026, the municipal investigation commission revealed that three separate security reports had previously recommended 24-hour surveillance for MUVI prior to the theft. These included an assessment by the former head of security at the Alicante Archaeological Museum, a City Council-commissioned audit, and a report from the Regional Police. PP spokesperson Miguel Ángel Salguero argued that the local government should have exceeded minimum regulatory requirements to ensure adequate protection.
