Castrol study finds driving thrill comes from focus, not speed
A study commissioned by Castrol and conducted with neuroscience firm Brainbox suggests that the thrill of driving is derived from cognitive focus and controlled immersion rather than high speeds. The research utilized specialized equipment to monitor brain electrical activity, heart rate variability, eye movement, and galvanic skin response across various driving scenarios.
Testing took place at a UK track facility operated by PalmerSport, involving a range of vehicles including a McLaren Artura GT4, a SODI GT5 Kart, and a classic Land Rover Defender. The findings indicate that peak excitement occurs when three factors converge: visceral response, intellectual engagement, and emotional balance.
According to Dan Phillips, co-founder of Brainbox Ltd., true thrill is achieved when a driver experiences elevated neurophysiological arousal while maintaining a sense of full control. If these stimuli exceed a driver's manageable threshold, the experience transitions from a state of thrill into fear.
