Catalan Fountain serves as cultural landmark in Buenos Aires
The Catalan Fountain, located in Plaza Cataluña at the intersection of Arroyo and Cerrito in the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires, serves as a cultural landmark donated by the City Council of Barcelona and the Sociedad General de Aguas.
A replica of Barcelona’s iconic Font de Canaletes, the fountain was inaugurated in 1996 during a ceremony attended by then-Chief of Government Fernando de la Rúa. Although originally designed for public drinking, the fountain suffered vandalism that damaged its taps. The components had to be specially reconstructed in their place of origin to maintain their unique characteristics. The restoration of the fountain was supported by the company La Recova de Posadas, which acts as a sponsor for Plaza Cataluña.
